For the last two year, Before The Lockdown, I've found some theatrical entertainment to amuse and entertain me ...
A dark and bloody exploration of the nature of friendship (real & obsessive) and guilt (hidden & realised) under the violence and oppression implicit (& explicit) in all cults.
It was horrifyingly engaging as the disturbing story of a boy known only as 'Orphan' is revealed to us, and the means by which he seeks justice against those who were knowingly, or not, complicit.
The BOV has a number of outreach programmes that encourage and help various groups of people develop both their ideas and skills. One such programme is Bristol Ferment which is a programme enabling collaboration and providing access to resources to local theatre-makers culminating in two short festivals each year.
Recently this programme was extended to support another of the BOV's programmes, the BOV Young Company.
So, on this day in 2019, which I think was the second year of Young Ferment, I saw four short works: The Iron Curtain, Unnatural, Let Them Eat Chaos, and Has it Started Yet?
Each had something interesting to say about issues such as state power, sexuality, conformity, identity and the like but, for me the most interesting, and important, thing is seeing bold new ideas being expressed in exciting ways by a group new, and young, theatre makers. It's reassuring to know that there are new ideas waiting in the wings, ready to take to the main stage.
